If the world of the Liverpool Dockers seems at odds with that of the Street Party, think again... |
As a result of the Merseyside Docks & Harbour Company's wheelin' and dealin' in an attempt to blag a couple more zeros on the profit sheet, the picket line as "street" has fostered the kind of community and spirit - characterised by self-reliance, awareness, mutuality and vitality - which lies at the heart of Reclaim the Streets and other alternative and grassroots groups. |
Since the mass sacking of Dockers in 1995, former colleagues have become extended family, neighbours have become friends, holiday destinations have become bastions of solidarity - and Street Party is becoming Street Parity. |
The coming together of Reclaim the Streets and the Dockers for a celebration of our common struggle moves us closer to realising a common vision. Only by support, understanding and exchange between all dissenting groups - non-workers and workers, political and antipolitical, ravers, ragers, North and South, generations, classes, cultures, the media-popular and the media blanked - can we stop the clampdown and reclaim our future from the eternal infernal of government and big business. |

By the very act of acknowledging that freedom is drowning and that, even if different lives flash before our eyes, the hand that holds our heads under water is the same hand, we grow from what is seen as a network of single issues into a Single Issue: united and coming up for air. |
