enculturation?
Oh dear, that's not even in the Concise Oxford Dictionary.
How else, though, briefly to name the complex set of processes through which we are
made into well-adjusted members of society-as-it-is? Or not?
"Upbringing" suggests all the explicit parental lessons, like when to say
"please" and "thankyou" (if, that is, your mother tongue has a word
for "please"). And "education"... nah.
Just remember:
- Look left, look right, look left again
- No ball games
- Don't talk to strangers
- Keep out of the road
